Ledger review: the cold wallet you can buy at Jarir

A Ledger keeps your private keys on a device that never touches the internet. What makes it the obvious hardware wallet for Saudi Arabia is simpler than the technology: Jarir sells the Nano X locally at SAR 669 including VAT, with a warranty and no customs.

Every guide tells Saudi readers to "move savings to a hardware wallet" and then goes quiet about how you actually get one in Riyadh or Dammam. Here is the answer: walk into Jarir, or open jarir.com, and buy a Ledger Nano X for SAR 669 including VAT, with a 12-month Jarir warranty. No cross-border order, no customs form, no wondering whether the courier package was opened. That single fact is why Ledger, rather than Trezor, is the hardware wallet we recommend first for the Kingdom, and this review explains what you are buying, what to do with it, and where Ledger has earned criticism.

We checked Jarir's product page, Ledger's official site and the competing sellers' pages in October 2026. Prices on amazon.sa and noon could not be verified and are not quoted.

Who a Ledger suits in Saudi Arabia

The saver, mainly. If you hold Bitcoin or USDT you do not intend to touch for months, and the sum would hurt to lose, a hardware wallet is the step after the mobile wallet. It suits the person whose exchange account has already been through one compliance review and who does not want to repeat the feeling; with no exchange licensed in Saudi Arabia and no regulator to appeal to, as our wallet guide explains, the only account nobody can freeze is the one whose keys you hold. And it suits the MetaMask user who wants the extension to stop holding keys.

It does not suit a first-time buyer with a few hundred riyals of Bitcoin; SAR 669 would be a large share of the holding, and a well-secured Trust Wallet is enough at that scale. Nor does it suit the active P2P trader who moves USDT daily, for whom the signing ritual becomes a chore.

Buying a Ledger at Jarir

Jarir Bookstore lists the Ledger Nano X (purple) as item 647145 at SAR 669 including 15% VAT, with a 12-month Jarir warranty and a 24-instalment plan shown on the product page. Stock status is not displayed online, so check your nearest branch or order for delivery. Jarir also carries Nano S Plus listings; a price aggregator showed one at a much lower price, but the snapshot was marked unavailable, so treat that as unconfirmed and check Jarir directly.

Why Jarir matters beyond convenience: it is an official Saudi retailer. The device arrives sealed from a known supply chain, the warranty is handled at a counter you can visit, and the price you see is the price you pay. Cross-border resellers list Nano X units anywhere between roughly SAR 540 and SAR 730 depending on the seller and the date, with no way to confirm the device is genuine, and Ledger's own shop does not clearly document shipping to the Kingdom. For an item whose entire purpose is trust, the Jarir premium is small.

How cold storage actually works

A hardware wallet does not "store coins"; the coins are on the blockchain. It stores the private keys inside a secure elementSecure elementA tamper-resistant chip, like the one in a bank card or passport, designed so the secret inside cannot be read out even with physical access. that never exposes them. When you send Bitcoin, Ledger Live on your phone or laptop builds the transaction and passes it to the device; the device shows the amount and the address on its own screen, you confirm with the buttons, and it returns a signed transaction. Malware on the computer can alter what the app displays, but not what the device displays, which is why you read the device screen and not the app.

That is the meaning of cold storageCold storageKeeping private keys on a device that never connects to the internet, so online attacks cannot reach them.: the key stays offline even while the transaction travels online. The 24-word seed phraseSeed phraseThe 24 words a Ledger generates that recreate every account on a new device. Anyone holding them owns your coins; lose them and no company can restore your funds. the device generates on first use is the backup. Write it on the supplied cards or stamp it in metal, keep copies in two places, and never type it into a computer, a phone or a website. If the device is lost or breaks, a new Ledger (or any compatible wallet) restored from the 24 words brings everything back.

Ledger Live and supported coins

Ledger Live is the companion app for desktop and mobile. It installs the per-coin apps on the device, shows balances, builds send and receive transactions, and offers buy, swap and staking through third-party partners. The coin coverage is wide: Bitcoin, Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, Solana, XRP, Tron with TRC-20 USDT, BNB and BNB Chain tokens, Cardano, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Toncoin and thousands more listed on Ledger's supported-assets page. Some assets are managed by connecting a third-party wallet such as MetaMask to the Ledger rather than through Ledger Live itself; the device still signs, the interface changes.

For Saudi users the buy and swap partners inside Ledger Live are of limited use: card acceptance for Saudi cards and provider availability for the Kingdom are not documented, and the pricing is convenience pricing. Buy on an exchange that accepts Saudi residents, then withdraw to the address Ledger Live shows and the device confirms. The Nano X's Bluetooth makes the mobile app practical; the Nano S Plus does the same job over a cable at a lower price if Jarir has it in stock.

Ledger Recover, briefly and factually

In 2023 Ledger announced Ledger Recover, an optional paid subscription: with your consent on the device, the firmware encrypts the seed phrase, splits it into three shards and sends them to three custodians, so a user who loses the 24 words can recover after identity verification. The backlash was loud, and the reason is worth understanding: the announcement revealed that the firmware could, with the user's approval, export the seed in encrypted form, which contradicted how many owners had understood the device. Ledger delayed the launch, published more technical detail and later released the service as opt-in.

Where that leaves a Saudi buyer: a Ledger never enrols in Recover unless you subscribe and confirm on the device, and the core model of keys in a secure element, signing on-device, is unchanged. If the episode bothers you on principle, that is a legitimate reason to look at Tangem, whose cards never expose the key at all, or at SafePal's air-gapped S1. We mention it so you buy with open eyes, not because it changes the recommendation for a device sold at Jarir.

Authorised sellers and tampered devices

The attacks on hardware wallets rarely target the chip. They target the purchase. A device bought second-hand or from an unknown marketplace seller can arrive "pre-initialised" with a PIN already set and a card of 24 words in the box; the seller keeps the same words and empties the wallet the moment you fund it. A variant adds a fake "replacement device" mailed after a data leak, with instructions to enter your existing seed. Ledger's own customer database was leaked in 2020, and owners have received phishing emails and parcels ever since, so expect messages claiming to be from Ledger and ignore every one that asks for your words.

The defence is procedural. Buy sealed from Jarir or the manufacturer's official shop. On first use the device must ask you to create a new wallet and generate the phrase itself; if it offers a phrase or already has a PIN, stop and return it. Verify the device's authenticity through Ledger Live's built-in check. And remember that the 15% VAT and any courier handling fee on a cross-border order are part of the price; the research for this page could not confirm an import-duty rate, so we do not quote one.

Ledger vs Tangem vs SafePal for Saudi buyers

Ledger Nano X SAR 669 incl. VAT at Jarir, 12-month local warranty, secure-element chip with a screen to verify addresses, Ledger Live plus MetaMask pairing. Highest price, widest ecosystem, the only local retail route.
vs
Tangem Ships to KSA officially: 2-card set USD 54.90, 3-card USD 69.90, shipping USD 7.99, 5–15 business days, taxes and duties excluded. No screen, no battery, NFC tap-to-sign, backup by spare card rather than a seed phrase by default. Cheapest documented hardware route.

SafePal S1 sits between them in concept: an air-gappedAir-gappedA device that never connects by cable, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi; data passes only through QR codes or a memory card, so there is no live link for malware to use. device that signs by scanning QR codes, with a free mobile app, at a lower list price than a Nano X, but with no verified Saudi purchase channel, so budget for cross-border shipping and VAT. Trezor, the other famous name, lists no Middle East reseller and its shipping page could not be checked, so it drops out for practical reasons rather than quality. If you want to walk out of a shop with the device today, Ledger at Jarir is the answer; if you want the cheapest hardware with a documented delivery route, Tangem is.

Setting up a Ledger from Saudi Arabia

  1. Buy sealed from Jarir

Item 647145, SAR 669 incl. VAT. Check the seal and keep the receipt for the 12-month warranty.

  2. Install Ledger Live from ledger.com

Follow the official link; verify the device through Ledger Live's genuine check before trusting it.

  3. Create a new wallet on the device

Set a PIN and write the 24 words the device shows, in order, on the supplied cards. Never photograph them.

  4. Test the backup before funding

Reset the device and restore from the 24 words once. If it restores, the backup works.

  5. Install coin apps and receive a test amount

Add Bitcoin or USDT in Ledger Live, generate a receive address, confirm it matches on the device screen, send a small test from your exchange.

  6. Move the savings, keep the hot wallet for spending

Withdraw long-term holdings to the Ledger; leave day-to-day amounts in Trust Wallet or on the exchange.

What stands out
  • Only hardware wallet with a documented Saudi retail route: Jarir, SAR 669 incl. VAT, 12-month warranty, no customs
  • Private keys in a secure element; transactions verified and signed on the device screen, not the phone
  • Ledger Live covers Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP, Tron (TRC-20 USDT), BNB, Cardano, Dogecoin, Litecoin, TON and thousands of assets
  • Pairs with MetaMask so Ethereum and BNB Chain apps sign through the hardware
  • Bluetooth on the Nano X makes the mobile Ledger Live app practical; Nano S Plus is the cheaper cabled option
What is missing
  • SAR 669 is well above a Tangem 2-card set (USD 54.90 plus shipping)
  • The 2023 Ledger Recover episode showed firmware can export the seed in encrypted form, if the user opts in
  • No Arabic in Ledger Live or on ledger.com as far as we could see
  • Ledger owners are a constant phishing target since the 2020 customer-data leak
  • In-app buy and swap partners are not documented for Saudi cards; use an exchange and withdraw instead

Verdict

8.5/10
Our score: The hardware wallet to buy in Saudi Arabia, because you can actually buy it here

A mature cold-storage device with the broadest coin support, and the only one with a local retail counter, a local warranty and a VAT-inclusive price. It loses a little for cost against Tangem, for the Recover controversy and for the absence of Arabic, but for a Saudi saver who wants keys off the phone this week, nothing else is as straightforward.

Before the device arrives, have something to put on it: buy Bitcoin with a card or Apple Pay, keep it on the exchange for the few days until the Ledger is set up and tested, then withdraw. Our wallet guide compares all six options, and the scams guide covers the fake-support messages every Ledger owner eventually receives.

Frequently asked questions

Where can I buy a Ledger in Saudi Arabia?

Jarir Bookstore lists the Ledger Nano X at SAR 669 including VAT, item 647145, with a 12-month Jarir warranty and a 24-instalment option on the product page; stock status is not shown, so check your branch or order online. Jarir also has Nano S Plus pages. Ledger's own shop does not clearly document shipping to the Kingdom, and amazon.sa and noon prices could not be verified.

Is a Ledger worth SAR 669?

If your crypto holding is worth more than a few thousand riyals, yes: it moves your keys off an internet-connected phone, so malware and phishing cannot sign transactions without the device in your hand. For a few hundred riyals a mobile wallet with a written seed phrase is enough. A Tangem 2-card set at USD 54.90 plus shipping is the cheaper hardware route.

What coins does Ledger support?

Ledger Live, the companion app, manages Bitcoin, Ethereum and ERC-20 tokens, Solana, XRP, Tron and TRC-20 USDT, BNB, Cardano, Dogecoin, Litecoin, Toncoin and thousands of other assets listed on Ledger's supported-assets page. Some coins need a third-party wallet such as MetaMask connected to the Ledger rather than Ledger Live itself.

What was the Ledger Recover controversy?

In 2023 Ledger announced Ledger Recover, an optional paid subscription that encrypts your seed phrase into shards held by three custodians so it can be restored after identity verification. Many users objected because it showed the firmware could export the seed in encrypted form. The service is opt-in; a device never enrols unless you sign up and confirm on it.

Can a used or second-hand Ledger be trusted?

No. A genuine device arrives unset and asks you to generate a fresh 24-word phrase; a device that comes "ready", with a PIN set or a phrase printed in the box, is a trap, because whoever prepared it holds the same phrase. Buy sealed from Jarir or the manufacturer, and set it up yourself.

Do I pay customs or VAT if I import a Ledger?

Buying from Jarir, the SAR 669 price already includes 15% VAT and there is no customs step. Ordering from abroad, import VAT is payable on arrival and the courier may add a handling charge; we do not quote an import-duty rate because none was confirmed. That is a strong argument for the local route.
