If you have bought crypto in Saudi Arabia with riyals, you have almost certainly bought USDT first. Tether's dollar stablecoinStablecoinA token designed to stay worth one US dollar (or another currency), backed by reserves the issuer says it holds. is the default tab on Binance's SAR P2PP2PPeer-to-peer: you pay another user in riyals through your bank app or STC Pay while the exchange holds their coins in escrow until they confirm your payment. market, the unit most riyal trades settle in, and the coin people send abroad when they use crypto for remittances. Because the riyal is pegged at 3.75 to the dollar, 1 USDT is worth about 3.75 SAR, and the only real question is how much above that you pay. This page answers that, explains the network choice that costs beginners their coins, and shows four ways to buy.

The usual caveat applies: crypto is not prohibited for individuals in the Kingdom, but it is unregulated, no exchange holds a Saudi licence, and the 2018 Standing Committee statement still warns that virtual currencies are not approved. USDT is no exception.

What USDT is, and why it matters in Saudi Arabia

USDT is a token issued by Tether that aims to stay worth exactly one US dollar. It is the third-largest crypto asset by market value and is listed on every exchange Saudis use, from CEX.IO and Binance to Bybit, OKX and Rain. For Saudi users it plays three roles. It is the entry point: you buy USDT with riyals on P2P, then swap it for Bitcoin or anything else. It is the parking spot: traders sit in USDT between trades rather than cashing out to the bank. And it is a transfer rail: on the right network it moves across borders in minutes for a small fee. That is why it sits first in our ranking of coins for Saudi residents, ahead of Bitcoin.

The 3.75 peg, and why P2P ads price above it

The Saudi riyal has been fixed at 3.75 per US dollar since 1986. USDT follows the dollar. So the fair reference price of 1 USDT is 3.75 SAR, and the converter at the top of the page will show something very close to that at any hour. On the SAR P2P market, however, sellers ask slightly more. They hold the coins, accept the risk that a buyer's bank transfer is reversed or comes from a stolen account, and wait for riyal transfers to clear. That premiumPremiumThe extra amount paid above the global reference price; on SAR P2P it is how sellers are paid for their time and risk. is the real cost of entering crypto with riyals. A secondary estimate puts it at roughly 0.3%–1% during Saudi banking hours; we have no live data to quote a fixed number, and it moves with demand.

The riyal has been pegged at 3.75 per US dollar since 1986. Anything above that is the cost of the route, not of the coin.

Use the calculator to compare ads: change the price to what a seller is asking and see the riyal cost of the gap. On top of the premium, Binance charges a flat 0.05 USDT taker fee per P2P order on USDT pairs in the SAR market (since March 2024), which is negligible on large orders and noticeable on very small ones. Selling USDT back to riyals works the same way in reverse: buyers bid slightly below or near the peg, and the spread between the two sides is your round-trip cost.

Networks: TRC-20, ERC-20, BEP-20, TON and Solana

USDT is not one coin on one blockchain. Tether issues it on many networks, and an exchange withdrawal screen will ask you which one to use. The rule is simple and unforgiving: the network you send on must be one the receiving wallet supports, or the coins can be lost. Tether's official list includes Ethereum (ERC-20), Tron (TRC-20), Solana, TON and several others; older networks such as Omni and EOS are deprecated. The network feeGas feeThe network fee paid to process a transaction on a blockchain; it varies by network and by how busy the network is. differs a lot between them, and exchanges add their own withdrawal fee on top.

USDT networks a Saudi user will see on withdrawal screens. Fees are described in general terms because they change with network load and differ by exchange; the exact figure is on each withdrawal screen.
NetworkTypical cost to sendCompatibilityWhen to use it
Tron (TRC-20)Low; typically a dollar or two at exchangesSupported by almost every exchange and mobile wallet; addresses start with "T"Default for P2P traders, exchange-to-exchange moves and remittances
Ethereum (ERC-20)Highest; can exceed several dollars when Ethereum is busyMost widely accepted; addresses start with "0x"When the receiver only takes ERC-20, or for DeFi on Ethereum
BNB Smart Chain (BEP-20)Very low at many exchangesBinance-pegged token, not an official Tether issuance; not offered by OKX or Kraken; "0x" addresses look like EthereumMoving within the Binance ecosystem only, after checking the receiver supports it
TONLowOfficial Tether network; used by Telegram wallets; some exchanges require a memoSending to Telegram-based wallets
SolanaVery lowOfficial Tether network; supported by Phantom and the major exchangesCheap transfers to Solana wallets

The classic Saudi mistake is sending USDT on TRC-20 to an ERC-20 address, or on BEP-20 to an exchange that only lists ERC-20, because the "0x" addresses look identical. Always copy the network name from the receiving side, send a small test amount first, and include a memoMemo / tagAn extra code some networks and exchanges require so the deposit is credited to the right account; leaving it out can delay or lose the transfer. if the receiving exchange shows one. If you plan to send USDT from your own Tron wallet, you also need a little TRX for fees; our Tron guide explains energy and bandwidth.

Buying USDT with STC Pay, urpay or a bank transfer

This is how most Saudi residents buy USDT, because it keeps everything in riyals. Binance runs the largest SAR market and officially added urpay and Liv. KSA as payment methods in April 2022; STC Pay and transfers from Al Rajhi, SNB and other banks appear in independent test reports. Bybit and OKX also run SAR P2P. Each rail has its own guide: USDT with STC Pay, urpay and bank transfer. The general flow is the same.

  1. Verify your exchange account

P2P requires full KYC. Bybit is reported to accept a Saudi National ID or Iqama with a selfie; Binance asks for ID and proof of address.

  2. Open P2P, set fiat to SAR, choose USDT

Filter by your payment method. Compare the price, the seller's completion rate and order count, and the minimum and maximum order size on the ad.

  3. Pay the exact amount from an account in your name

Transfer from your own STC Pay wallet or bank account. Leave the transfer note blank or use the order number; do not write "USDT" or "crypto".

  4. Mark as paid and wait for release

The seller confirms receipt and the exchange releases the USDT from escrow. If the seller stalls, open an appeal inside the platform. Never cancel an order you have already paid.

  5. Withdraw or convert

Swap to another coin on the spot market, or withdraw to your own wallet on the network that wallet supports, after a small test transfer.

Buying USDT by card on CEX.IO, or by bank on CoinMENA

If you prefer not to deal with private sellers, two routes skip P2P. CEX.IO, operating since 2013, sells USDT by Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay, charged in US dollars: you buy dollars' worth of USDT, and your bank converts from riyals and usually adds a foreign-transaction fee. CEX.IO publishes card fees of 0.49%–4.99% plus a service charge, a 20 USD minimum and a 3,000 USD per-transaction cap after ID verification. Saudi users are served by the group company CEX OVRS LLC in Nevis; the FinCEN and FCA registrations belong to its US and UK sister companies. It suits small, quick purchases more than large ones, because the card fee is a percentage and the P2P premium often is not larger.

The second route is a riyal bank transfer to CoinMENA, licensed in Bahrain and Dubai, which publishes a 0% SAR deposit fee (minimum SAR 37.5), 0.75% trading and a SAR 117.5 withdrawal fee. Neither CEX.IO nor CoinMENA is licensed in Saudi Arabia.

Sending USDT abroad

Expatriates in Saudi Arabia sent a record SAR 165.5 billion home in 2025, mostly to Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Egypt and the Philippines, overwhelmingly through banks and exchange houses. Some send USDT instead: buy with riyals on P2P, send on TRC-20 to a relative's wallet, and the relative sells for local currency on their own P2P market. It can be fast and cheap, but there is no sourced data on how common it is, both ends carry P2P fraud risk, and the recipient's country may restrict crypto. Our remittance guide compares it honestly with the bank route.

Reserves, regulation and the Saudi stablecoin announcement

A stablecoin is only as good as the reserves behind it. Tether says each USDT is backed by reserves it holds and publishes periodic attestation reports by an accounting firm on its transparency page. Those are attestations, not full audits, and Tether is not regulated by any Saudi authority; critics have long pointed to that gap, and in a crisis the token could trade below one dollar for a time. In Saudi Arabia itself, a minister said in November 2025 that the government is working with the CMA and SAMA to launch regulated stablecoins. No framework, rulebook or Saudi coin has been published since, and no riyal stablecoin exists today; if one is launched, it will be announced by SAMA or the CMA, not by a Telegram channel.

Halal view of stablecoins

There is no dedicated scholarly consensus on USDT, and we do not issue rulings. Many Sharia-screening services treat a fiat-backed stablecoin as a currency equivalent, so buying it with riyals is judged like currency exchange: permissible when spot and settled immediately, with no interest. Others question whether a privately issued token is genuine property, and a fatwa in Pakistan reportedly declared USDT impermissible, though we could not verify the source. What most scholars agree on is that lending USDT for a fixed return, or holding it in "earn" products that pay guaranteed yield, raises a riba problem. If you hold USDT, hold it plainly. Our halal guide sets out the arguments with sources.

USDT scams to know before you trade

USDT is the most practical coin a Saudi resident can hold: it moves at the speed of a message and keeps its value against the riyal as long as Tether keeps its reserves. Pick the network carefully, compare premiums, and keep only what you need on any exchange.

Frequently asked questions

How much is 1 USDT in Saudi riyals?

Close to 3.75. USDT tracks the US dollar and the riyal has been pegged at 3.75 per dollar since 1986, so the reference price is 3.75 SAR. On SAR P2P markets sellers ask a little more, a small premium that pays for their time and bank risk. The converter at the top of the page shows the live CoinGecko rate; the calculator below shows what a given premium costs you.

Which network should I use for USDT: TRC-20, ERC-20 or BEP-20?

Use the network your receiving wallet or exchange supports, and nothing else. For cheap transfers between exchanges and mobile wallets, Tron (TRC-20) and TON are the usual choices; Ethereum (ERC-20) is the most widely accepted but the most expensive when the network is busy. BEP-20 USDT on BNB Smart Chain is a Binance-pegged token, not an official Tether issuance, and some exchanges such as OKX and Kraken do not offer it.

Can I buy USDT with STC Pay in Saudi Arabia?

Yes, through P2P. On Binance or Bybit you choose a seller who accepts STC Pay, transfer riyals to them from your STC Pay wallet, and the exchange releases the USDT from escrow once they confirm. STC Pay itself (now stc bank) does not sell crypto and its terms say nothing about it. Our STC Pay guide covers the steps and the account-safety rules.

Is USDT halal?

There is no dedicated scholarly consensus. Many Sharia-screening services treat fiat-backed stablecoins as a currency equivalent, so exchanging them is judged like currency exchange: spot, hand to hand, no interest. Others question whether a privately issued token is real property. What most agree on is that USDT "earn" or lending products paying a fixed yield raise a riba problem.

Is there a Saudi riyal stablecoin?

No. In November 2025 a Saudi minister said the government is working with the CMA and SAMA to launch regulated stablecoins, but no framework, rulebook or coin has been published. Anyone selling a "Saudi riyal stablecoin" or "SAR token" today is not offering an official product.

What is "flash USDT"?

A scam. Sellers advertise "flash USDT" that appears in a wallet and can be "spent for 90 days" at a discount. It is either a fake token with the USDT name or a display trick; it cannot be sold on any real exchange. Real USDT is never sold below its value, and an offer to do so is the whole warning.
