Buying Ethereum from Saudi Arabia works the same two ways as Bitcoin: a card purchase in US dollars on CEX.IO, or riyals to USDT on a Binance or Bybit P2PP2PPeer-to-peer: you buy from another user on the exchange, which holds the coins in escrow until your riyal payment is confirmed. market and then USDT to ETH on the spot market. The converter above gives the live price in SAR. What makes ETH different is everything that happens after you buy it: gas feesGas feeThe network fee paid to process a transaction on Ethereum, priced in ETH. It rises when the network is busy. that can make a small transfer absurdly expensive, a staking system that scholars argue about, and a wallet ecosystem that is both the most useful and the most scam-prone in crypto. This page covers all of it in plain words.
What Ethereum is
Bitcoin is a ledger that records who owns which coins. Ethereum, launched in 2015, is a ledger that can also run programs, called smart contracts: small pieces of code that move money according to rules without a company in the middle. Stablecoins such as USDT and USDC, NFTs, decentralised exchanges and most of what is called Web3 are contracts on Ethereum or on networks copied from it. The coin, ether (ETH), is what you pay to run those programs; every transaction burns a little of it as gas.
Since 2022 Ethereum has been secured by stakingStakingLocking coins to help run a proof-of-stake network and earning rewards for validating transactions. rather than mining: instead of computers competing to solve puzzles, holders lock ETH as collateral and earn rewards for validating blocks. That shift cut the network's energy use dramatically and created the staking products that we discuss below. On CoinGecko ETH sat at rank 2 by market value in October 2026, behind Bitcoin, and it is listed on every exchange Saudis use, including CEX.IO, Binance, Bybit, OKX, KuCoin and the Bahrain-licensed Rain.
Buying ETH from the Kingdom
No crypto exchange holds a Saudi licence and SAMA-supervised banks do not offer crypto services, so every route is offshore. The two below are the ones that work for residents; our ways to buy guide compares them with bank transfers and OTC.
| Route | You pay with | Fees you will see | Time | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CEX.IO Instant Buy | Saudi Visa/Mastercard or Apple Pay, charged in USD | Card fee in the published 0.49%–4.99% range plus a service charge; bank foreign-transaction mark-up usually 2–3% | Minutes after ID check | First purchase, up to 3,000 USD per transaction |
| Binance, Bybit or OKX SAR P2P, then spot | Riyals by bank transfer, STC Pay or urpay | Small premium over 3.75 SAR per USDT, then the spot fee for USDT→ETH (a fraction of a percent) | 15–60 minutes | Paying in riyals, larger amounts |
| CoinMENA (Bahrain-licensed) | SAR bank deposit | Official SAR fees: bank deposit 0% (min SAR 37.5), card/Apple Pay 4%, trading 0.75% | Hours for the deposit | A licensed Gulf platform with riyal rails |
Binance's riyal P2P page shows an ETH tab next to USDT, so on a good day you can buy ETH for riyals directly; the tab is thinner than USDT, so compare the implied price before you accept an ad. The premiumPremiumThe extra paid above the global price. On SAR P2P markets USDT sells slightly above the 3.75 peg. is your real cost on the P2P route, and our USDT guide explains how to read it.
Card route for a first purchaseCEX.IO's Instant Buy takes a Saudi card or Apple Pay in USD from 20 USD; the exact commission appears before you confirm. ETH is volatile; buy what you can afford to see fall by half.
Create a free accountStep by step on the P2P route
- Verify on Binance, Bybit or OKX
National ID or passport; Iqama acceptance varies by platform. Turn on two-factor authentication immediately.
- Buy USDT for riyals on P2P
Filter by STC Pay, urpay or bank transfer, pick a seller with a high completion rate, pay from an account in your own name and write only the reference the platform shows.
- Trade USDT for ETH on spot
Open ETH/USDT. A market order fills now; a limit order waits for your price. ETH is deeply liquid, so slippage is negligible for retail sizes.
- Decide where it lives
Trading soon? Leave it on the exchange. Holding? Withdraw to MetaMask or a Ledger. The withdrawal fee is a fixed amount of ETH set by the exchange; check it against your balance.
- Choose the network carefully when withdrawing
Exchanges offer ETH on Ethereum mainnet and on layer-2 networks such as Arbitrum or Base. The receiving wallet must be on the same network. Send a small test first.
Gas and layer-2, in plain words
Every action on Ethereum costs gas, paid in ETH, and the price of gas floats with demand. On a quiet night a simple transfer may cost under a dollar; during a market frenzy the same transfer can cost tens of dollars. For a Saudi buyer this has two consequences. First, keep a little ETH in any wallet that holds ERC-20 tokens, or you will be unable to move them. Second, never move small amounts of stablecoins on Ethereum mainnet; the fee can exceed the transfer.
Layer-2 networks are the industry's answer. Arbitrum, Base, Optimism and Polygon process transactions off the main chain and post compressed summaries back to Ethereum, so fees fall to cents while security still rests on Ethereum. Many exchanges let you withdraw ETH and USDC directly to these networks. The catch is that each layer-2 is a separate network with its own addresses in your wallet; sending mainnet ETH to an Arbitrum-only service, or vice versa, can strand funds. The rule from our glossary applies: the network on the sending side must match the network on the receiving side, exactly.
- Ethereum mainnet
- Most secure, most expensive; fees float with demand
- Layer-2 (Arbitrum, Base, Optimism, Polygon)
- Cents per transaction; separate network, same wallet address format
- What you need in the wallet
- A small ETH balance on whichever network you use, to pay gas
- Common mistake
- Sending USDT ERC-20 to a TRC-20 address or a layer-2 address that the recipient does not support
Staking and the halal debate
Staking ETH means locking it to help validate the network and earning a variable reward, paid in ETH, that depends on how many others are staking and how busy the chain is. Exchanges package this as "ETH Earn" products, sometimes with a quoted percentage. This is where scholars differ, and we do not issue rulings; we describe the positions.
The permissive view holds that native staking is a payment for a service, validation, with a reward that varies and can be reduced if the validator misbehaves, which makes it unlike a loan at interest. Mufti Faraz Adam of Amanah Advisors is reported, in a 2020 Islamic Finance Guru forum summary, to have said staking is permissible in itself if everything around it is permissible, judged coin by coin. The stricter view objects to any arrangement that pays a predictable yield on money locked with a counterparty, and treats fixed-rate "earn" products, where an exchange promises you 4% regardless of what the network pays, as ribaRibaInterest or any guaranteed increase on a loan, prohibited in Islamic finance.-shaped. Liquid staking tokens and restaking layers draw more objections still because they add lending-like mechanics on top.
Two practical notes for Saudi readers. Binance launched a Sharia Earn product in July 2025, certified by Amanie Advisors under a wakala structure, covering BNB, SOL and a wrapped ETH; whether Saudi accounts are eligible is not confirmed on Binance's pages, so check in the app. And Bybit's Islamic Account, certified by ZICO Shariah in September 2024, is spot-only and does not include staking. The halal guide lists the conditions scholars commonly cite, including the Saudi scholars who consider crypto itself impermissible, so you can decide with someone you trust.
ETH vs BTC for a beginner in Saudi Arabia
Most people in Riyadh or Jeddah making a first purchase do better with Bitcoin or USDT, then add ETH once they have used a wallet and paid a gas fee. Neither coin is safe: both have dropped 30% in a month more than once. If you want a single sentence: Bitcoin is a bet on scarcity, Ethereum is a bet on usage.
Stablecoins on Ethereum: ERC-20 and why TRC-20 wins for small sums
USDT and USDC both exist as ERC-20 tokens on Ethereum, and Ethereum is the most widely accepted network for them. But an ERC-20 USDT transfer pays Ethereum gas, which at busy times runs to 5–20 USD or more, while the same USDT on Tron's TRC-20 network typically costs around 1–2 USD and on BNB Smart Chain a few cents at some exchanges. That is why nearly every Saudi P2P trader moves USDT on TRC-20 and treats ERC-20 as the network for large transfers or for services that accept nothing else. Tether's official supported-protocol list includes Ethereum, Tron, Solana, TON and others; note that "BEP-20 USDT" is a Binance-pegged version rather than an official Tether issuance. The full picture, including which network each exchange supports, is on the USDT page and the Tron page.
Wallets, token approvals and the scams to expect
MetaMask is the standard Ethereum wallet: a browser extension and a mobile app on the Saudi App Store that holds ETH, ERC-20 tokens and layer-2 balances under one seed phraseSeed phraseThe 12 to 24 words that recreate your wallet. Anyone who has them owns your coins; no exchange or wallet company ever needs them.. Trust Wallet does the same on mobile. For larger holdings pair either with a Ledger hardware wallet, which Jarir sells for SAR 669 including VAT, so the keys never touch a phone. The wallets hub compares them.
Ethereum's flexibility is also its danger. Three scams account for most losses. Fake tokens: anyone can create an ERC-20 token called "USDT" or "ETH 2.0"; only the contract address identifies the real one, so add tokens from the exchange's or issuer's official page, never from a link in a chat. Token approvals: a site asks your wallet to "approve" spending a token, and a malicious approval lets it drain that token later; approve only on sites you trust and revoke old approvals periodically. Airdrop and "wallet verification" phishing: a page promises free tokens if you connect a wallet and sign a message, and the signature authorises a transfer. Nothing legitimate ever needs your seed phrase. Our scams guide covers the P2P and giveaway frauds that apply to every coin.
Start small, pay one gas fee on purpose so you understand it, and keep anything you plan to hold for years in a wallet whose seed phrase is on paper in your home. If you only want price exposure with the card in your pocket, CEX.IO's Instant Buy gets you there in minutes.
Frequently asked questions
How do I buy Ethereum in Saudi Arabia?
Either pay in US dollars with a Saudi Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay on CEX.IO, which lists ETH against USD, EUR, USDT and USDC, or buy USDT with riyals on the Binance, Bybit or OKX P2P market and trade it for ETH on the spot market. Binance's SAR P2P page also shows an ETH tab. No exchange holds a Saudi licence, so keep long-term coins in your own wallet.
What is the Ethereum price in SAR?
The converter at the top shows the live CoinGecko price of ETH in Saudi riyals; because the riyal is pegged at 3.75 per dollar, it equals the dollar price times 3.75. Add the P2P premium or the card fee to get your real cost.
Is Ethereum staking halal?
Scholars differ. Native staking pays variable rewards for validation work, which many scholars treat as permissible in principle; Mufti Faraz Adam is reported to have said in 2020 that staking is permissible in itself if everything around it is permissible, judged coin by coin. Fixed-yield "earn" products that promise a set percentage look like riba to most scholars. Binance's Sharia Earn (July 2025, certified by Amanie Advisors) includes a wrapped ETH product, but its availability to Saudi users is not confirmed.
What is a gas fee?
The fee paid to the Ethereum network to process a transaction, priced in ETH. It rises when the network is busy. Moving USDT on Ethereum (ERC-20) can cost 5 to 20 dollars or more at peak times, which is why Saudi P2P traders use the TRC-20 network on Tron for small transfers instead.
Should a beginner buy Ethereum or Bitcoin?
They are different bets. Bitcoin is a fixed-supply asset held mainly as digital gold; Ethereum is a platform whose coin pays for computation, so its value tracks how much the network is used. Most beginners in Saudi Arabia start with Bitcoin or USDT, then add ETH once they understand gas fees and wallets. Neither is a safe asset; both can fall 30% in a month.
Which wallet works for ETH in Saudi Arabia?
MetaMask is the standard Ethereum wallet and is on the Saudi App Store; Trust Wallet also supports ETH and ERC-20 tokens. For larger amounts a Ledger hardware wallet, sold at Jarir for SAR 669 including VAT, keeps the keys offline and works with MetaMask.
