Buy BNB in Saudi Arabia: the coin behind the SAR P2P market

BNB is the exchange coin of Binance, which runs the largest riyal P2P market, and the fuel of BNB Smart Chain, the cheapest common rail for moving USDT. If you trade in riyals at all, you will meet BNB sooner or later. Here is what it does, what it saves, and where it goes wrong.

If you would rather not run a P2P trade, CEX.IO lists BNB/USD and takes Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay in USD. Minimum 20 USD. BNB moves with Binance's fortunes; hold only what you can afford to.

The direct answer: a Saudi resident buys BNB either on the Binance P2PP2PPeer-to-peer: you buy from another person on the exchange and the platform holds the coins in escrow until the seller confirms your bank, stc pay or urpay payment. market in riyals, where a BNB tab sits next to USDT, or with a Saudi Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay on CEX.IO, which lists BNB against USD and USDC. The reason to hold it is practical rather than romantic: it cuts Binance spot fees by a quarter and pays the network fee on BNB Smart Chain, the rail many people use to shuttle USDT for a few halalas.

What BNB is

BNB started in 2017 as a token Binance sold to fund its launch, with one promise: hold it and pay lower trading fees. It has since become the native coin of BNB Smart Chain (BSC), a smart-contract network run by a small set of validators that is compatible with Ethereum tools but far cheaper to use. Every transaction on BSC burns a little BNB as gasGas feeThe fee a network charges to process a transaction. On BNB Smart Chain it is paid in BNB and usually amounts to a few halalas., and Binance also destroys BNB from its own holdings on a published schedule, so the supply shrinks over time.

Think of BNB as two things in one: a loyalty token for the biggest exchange that serves the Kingdom, and the fuel of a network where "BEP-20" tokens, including a pegged version of USDT, change hands cheaply. It is the fourth-largest coin by market value on the day we checked, which is remarkable for an asset whose fate is tied so tightly to one company.

Why BNB matters to someone in Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia has no licensed exchange and no SAR wallet on any global platform. What it has is a Binance P2P market in riyals, live since the "Marhaba Arabia" launch of 2020, where urpay and Liv. KSA were added as official payment methods on 29 April 2022 and where sellers also accept bank transfers and stc pay according to test reports. That market is the way most people in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam turn riyals into crypto, and BNB is the coin the venue itself rewards you for holding.

Three concrete uses follow from that:

  • Lower spot fees. Once you have bought USDT on P2P, converting it to Bitcoin, Ethereum or anything else happens on the spot market, where the standard fee is 0.1%. Pay the fee in BNB and it drops to 0.075%. Small per trade, meaningful over a year of regular buys.
  • Cheap USDT transfers on BEP-20. Withdrawing USDT from Binance on BNB Smart Chain costs a fraction of what the Ethereum network charges, and you need a sliver of BNB in a self-custody wallet to move those tokens onward.
  • A riyal P2P tab of its own. You do not have to go through USDT: the SAR P2P market lists BNB directly, so a seller can hand you BNB against a bank transfer. Depth is thinner than for USDT, so compare the implied price with the spot market before accepting an ad.

Set against that, one honest sentence: Binance holds no Saudi licence, its only Gulf licence is from the Central Bank of Bahrain, and the "Gulf Binance" you may read about is a Thai joint venture with nothing to do with the GCC. The Binance app is on the Saudi App Store with the standard note that some products may not be available in your region. Our Binance review goes through the whole picture; this page sticks to the coin.

The fee discount, in numbers

0.1%Binance regular spot fee, maker and taker
0.075%the same fee when paid in BNB (25% off)
0.05 USDTflat P2P taker fee per order on USDT pairs in the SAR market
0Saudi-licensed exchanges, Binance included

Worked example. Suppose you buy SAR 3,750 of USDT on P2P every month (about 1,000 USDT) and convert it to Bitcoin on spot. At 0.1% the spot fee is roughly 1 USDT a month; with BNB enabled it is 0.75 USDT. Over a year that is about 3 USDT saved, or a little over SAR 11. The discount is real but it is not a reason to hold a volatile coin by itself. The honest framing: if you already trade on Binance regularly, keeping a small BNB balance for fees is tidy; if you are buying BNB as an investment, judge it as a bet on Binance's business, because that is what it is.

The P2P side is different. Since 19 March 2024 Binance charges takers a flat 0.05 USDT per order on USDT pairs in selected fiat markets, and SAR is on that list. BNB does not discount it. Makers (people who post ads) have their own fee scale. Our P2P guide explains the maker and taker roles and the premiumPremiumThe amount SAR P2P sellers charge above the 3.75 peg. It is the real cost of buying crypto with riyals, and it varies with demand and banking hours. you pay over the 3.75 peg.

Buying BNB through the SAR P2P market, step by step

  1. Verify the Binance account

Complete identity verification with your national ID, Iqama or passport and a selfie. Turn on two-factor authentication and set an anti-phishing code.

  2. Open P2P, choose SAR, then BNB

In the P2P section set the fiat to SAR and pick the BNB tab (or USDT if the BNB ads are thin). Filter by your payment method: bank transfer, stc pay or urpay.

  3. Pick a seller by record, not price

Prefer high completion rates and hundreds of orders. A price far below the others is a warning, not a bargain.

  4. Pay from your own account and mark as paid

Transfer the exact riyal amount from an account in your own name. Never write "crypto", "Binance" or "USDT" in the transfer note; a plain reference is enough.

  5. Wait for release, then enable BNB fees

The coins leave escrow when the seller confirms. In account settings switch on "pay fees with BNB" so spot trades use the discount.

  6. Withdraw what you are not trading

Send long-term holdings to Trust Wallet, SafePal or a Ledger from Jarir. BNB withdrawals need no memo; just choose the right network.

BEP-20 and moving USDT cheaply

BEP-20BEP-20The token standard of BNB Smart Chain, the equivalent of ERC-20 on Ethereum or TRC-20 on Tron. Addresses start with 0x, the same format as Ethereum, which is both convenient and dangerous. is why many SAR P2P traders end up with a little BNB even if they never wanted it. Withdrawing USDT from Binance on BNB Smart Chain is among the cheapest options the exchange offers, often a small fraction of a dollar according to fee tables we reviewed, against several dollars on ERC-20 at busy times. Once the USDT is in your own wallet, though, every onward transfer needs BNB for gas. Keep the equivalent of a few riyals of BNB in any wallet that holds BEP-20 tokens.

A related detail: BSC addresses look identical to Ethereum addresses (0x...), because they use the same format. A wallet like MetaMask will happily show you the same address on both networks. That makes it easy to send a BEP-20 token to an address that only expects the Ethereum network. The address is "valid", the tokens arrive on BSC, and the exchange's Ethereum deposit system never sees them. Choose the network deliberately; do not rely on the address to tell you.

Risks and scams around BNB

BNB's price is tied to one company's fortunes. Regulatory actions against Binance in various countries have moved it sharply, and a bad headline on a Friday night can take 15 percent off by Saturday morning. Holding a little for fees exposes you to pennies of that; holding a lot is a concentrated bet. The scams are specific to the chain:

  • Fake BEP-20 tokens. Creating a token on BSC costs almost nothing, and the creator chooses the name and symbol. Wallets fill with "USDT", "BNB" or "SAUDI" tokens that cannot be sold. Verify the contract address against the exchange's deposit page or bscscan.com before believing any balance. Real BNB is the chain's native coin, not a contract.
  • Airdrop baits. A token appears in your wallet with a website in its name promising to "claim" more. Visiting the site and signing a transaction can drain the wallet. Never interact with tokens you did not buy.
  • "Binance Saudi" APKs shared on WhatsApp and Telegram. There is no Saudi version of Binance; install only from the App Store or Google Play and check the developer name (Binance Switzerland AG on iOS).
  • P2P triangulation. When selling BNB or USDT for riyals, release escrow only after the money is in your own account from a payer whose name matches the verified buyer. The scams guide covers the pattern in detail.

And the frame that applies to every coin here: crypto is not prohibited for individuals in Saudi Arabia, but it is unregulated. The 2018 Standing Committee statement that virtual currencies are not regulated in the Kingdom and that nobody is licensed still stands, and SAMA-supervised banks and apps such as stc pay and urpay offer no crypto services themselves. CEX.IO's US and UK group companies hold FinCEN MSB registration (NMLS 1804170) and an FCA cryptoasset registration (1007192); the entity serving Saudi residents, CEX OVRS LLC in Nevis, names no regulator. Keep only trading balances on any exchange, and move the rest to a wallet you control.

Frequently asked questions

Can I buy BNB with riyals on Binance?

Yes. Binance's SAR P2P market shows a BNB tab next to USDT, BTC and ETH, so you can pay a seller by bank transfer, stc pay or urpay and receive BNB into escrow. Riyal advertisers for BNB are fewer than for USDT, so many buyers purchase USDT on P2P and then convert to BNB on the spot market, where the pair is deep.

How much does BNB save on Binance fees?

Binance's fee page lists a regular user's spot fee at 0.1% maker and taker, and 0.075% when fees are paid in BNB, labelled "BNB 25% off". You need to hold a little BNB in your spot wallet and switch the option on in account settings. The P2P taker fee of 0.05 USDT per order on USDT pairs in the SAR market is separate and not discounted.

Is Binance licensed in Saudi Arabia?

No. No crypto exchange holds a Saudi licence. Binance's only Gulf licence is from the Central Bank of Bahrain, and "Gulf Binance" is an unrelated joint venture in Thailand. The Binance app is listed on the Saudi App Store with the note that some products may not be available in your region.

What is BEP-20 and why do people use it for USDT?

BEP-20 is the token standard of BNB Smart Chain. Exchanges that support it, including Binance, charge very low withdrawal fees for USDT on BEP-20, often far below TRC-20 or ERC-20. Two caveats: the BSC version is Binance-Peg BSC-USD, not an official Tether issuance, and OKX and Kraken do not offer USDT withdrawals on BEP-20, so check the receiving platform first.

Can I buy BNB without using Binance?

Yes. CEX.IO lists BNB/USD and BNB/USDC and takes a Saudi Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay in dollars. Bybit, KuCoin and OKX list BNB spot pairs too, though liquidity outside Binance is thinner. Rain does not list BNB on the pages we checked.

Why did a token called "BNB" in my wallet turn out to be worthless?

Anyone can create a BEP-20 token and name it whatever they like, including "BNB", "USDT" or "Tether USD". Real BNB on BNB Smart Chain is the native coin, not a contract token, and real Binance-Peg USDT has one specific contract address. Always verify the contract address on bscscan.com or the exchange's deposit page before trusting a balance.
