Crypto in Qassim and Ha'il: Buraidah, Unaizah and Ha'il

A region of date, wheat and livestock traders, Saudi-majority, whose relationship with the bank rests on trust and habit. There is no physical crypto outlet here, but anyone who decides to buy can do it from a phone, provided they know what they are buying.

If you are in Buraidah, Unaizah or Ha'il asking "where do I buy Bitcoin here?", the straight answer is: neither Qassim nor Ha'il has a Bitcoin ATM, a shop or an exchange office selling crypto, just like the rest of the Kingdom. Buying happens in an app, by card in US dollars or through P2PP2P (peer-to-peer)You buy from another user on the exchange and send them riyals from your bank, urpay or STC Pay, while the exchange holds the coins in escrow until the seller confirms receipt. in riyals. But in Qassim the question rarely stops at "where". Straight after it come "is it permissible?", "is it safe?" and "what about Zakat?". This page tries to answer all four in the order that matters to people here.

Qassim and Ha'il differ from Riyadh, Jeddah and the Eastern Province: most residents are Saudi, the economy is agricultural and mercantile, and there is no documented local crypto story in either. So we cover both on one page instead of two empty ones, with a section for each city.

Qassim and Ha'il in numbers

Qassim region has 1,336,179 residents at the 2022 census, 30.7% of them non-Saudi, meaning roughly seven in ten are Saudi. Ha'il region has 746,406, of whom 29.3% are non-Saudi. Compare that with Riyadh (48.3%) or the Eastern Province (42.4%) and you see why the question differs here: an expat in Riyadh asks how to send money home, while a citizen in Buraidah asks about investing and about the Sharia ruling.

The legal frame does not change: crypto is not prohibited for individuals but it is unregulated, no exchange is licensed in the Kingdom, the banks and payment providers SAMA supervises do not offer crypto services, and the 2018 Standing Committee statement remains the official position. Do not call it "illegal" or "licensed"; the accurate description is "unregulated, with no local protection". Our legal status page explains it.

Buraidah: the date market and a trader's mindset

Buraidah is a city of 571,169 people in a governorate of 677,647 (2022 census). Saudipedia describes it as home to "the largest date markets in the world", exporting to more than 20 countries, and together with the rest of Qassim it accounts for about 6.6% of the Kingdom's commercial establishments. The region has more than 8 million palms producing around 205,000 tonnes of dates a year, it is a major wheat producer, and it sits on the North Train route and the highways between Riyadh, Medina and Ha'il. Camel and livestock trading is a long-standing part of its traditional economy.

Why does that matter? Because a date trader understands something everyone approaching crypto needs: auction prices move with supply and demand, a good season does not guarantee the next, and selling in a hurry costs money. The difference is that crypto is far more volatile than dates; Bitcoin can lose a third of its value in weeks. Someone who treats crypto the way they treat the auction, with a measured amount, patience and no borrowing, is much closer to safety than someone who treats it as a get-rich-quick opportunity.

Unaizah

Unaizah, Qassim's second city, shares Buraidah's agricultural and trading character. We found no documented crypto information about it, no events, companies or cases, and we will not invent any. Anyone searching from Unaizah gets the same answer: no ATMs, no offices, and an online route as described below. Qassim University nearby also means a student audience that needs a specific warning about "signals" channels promising daily profits.

Ha'il: farming, a university and the rally

Ha'il is a city of 448,623 people in a governorate of 498,575 (2022 census). Its economy is mainly agricultural (wheat and dates), and it is home to the University of Ha'il (founded 2006) and Hail International Airport. It is known internationally for the Hail Rally, approved by the FIA since 2008, which brings teams and visitors from abroad each season.

For crypto, Ha'il is the clear definition of "online only": a small, Saudi-majority city with no local crypto infrastructure at all, but excellent mobile coverage and banks that work normally. The CST puts national internet penetration at 99.6%, so nothing stops a Ha'il resident from using the same apps as someone in Riyadh. The only difference is that there is no local event to learn at, so it is on you to learn from reliable sources before paying anything.

Banking habits: Al Rajhi, urpay and crypto

In Qassim and Ha'il, as in much of the Kingdom, Al Rajhi Bank has a strong presence and wide trust, and people here tend to prefer the bank they have used for years over new apps. That raises a practical question: can you buy crypto from an Al Rajhi account?

The precise answer: Al Rajhi itself, like every SAMA-supervised bank, offers no crypto service and has published no position allowing or forbidding purchases through outside platforms, so we attribute none to it. But urpay, Al Rajhi's digital wallet, has been an officially listed payment method in Binance's SAR P2P market since 29 April 2022, alongside Liv. KSA. That means you transfer from urpay to another user's account on Binance, and the platform holds the coins in escrowescrowOn P2P the exchange locks the seller's coins and releases them to the buyer only after the seller confirms the payment arrived. until the seller confirms receipt. An ordinary bank transfer from Al Rajhi or SNB to a P2P seller usually works too; test reports say domestic person-to-person transfers clear without comment. Our page on buying with urpay walks through the steps.

madamadaSaudi Arabia's domestic debit card network. A mada-only card often fails at foreign payment processors, unlike cards co-badged with Visa or Mastercard. debit cards, on the other hand, are often declined by foreign payment processors according to test reports; credit cards and Apple Pay go through more reliably.

How to buy from Qassim or Ha'il

Route one for a beginner: a card purchase in US dollars. CEX.IO has operated since 2013, does not list Saudi Arabia among unsupported countries and serves residents through CEX OVRS LLC; Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay, minimum 20 USD, and a published card fee range of 0.49% to 4.99% plus a service charge. Your bank converts riyals to dollars and usually adds a foreign-transaction fee. Route two: SAR P2P on Binance or Bybit via urpay or bank transfer; Binance charges 0.05 USDT per order on USDT pairs, and prices usually sit slightly above the 3.75 peg. If you prefer a Gulf-licensed platform with a published riyal fee schedule, there is CoinMENA. The full comparison is on our best exchanges page.

  1. Set the amount you can afford to lose

Before any app: what amount, lost completely, would not touch household spending or your trading capital? That is your ceiling.

  2. Verify with your national ID

Platforms accept a national ID or passport plus a selfie. Use your name exactly as it appears on your bank account, because a mismatch stops P2P trades.

  3. Fund from your own account

Card or Apple Pay, or a transfer from urpay or your Al Rajhi account to a P2P seller. Never pay in a relative's name and never accept a third-party transfer.

  4. Never release before you see the money

If you sell on P2P, do not confirm receipt until the amount is in your banking app, not in a screenshot the buyer sends you.

  5. Keep what you are not trading in your own wallet

A wallet whose keys you hold. Jarir sells the Ledger Nano X at SAR 669 including VAT; write the seed phrase on paper, not in your phone.

Sharia and Zakat questions

In a conservative region like Qassim, the question of permissibility comes before the question of price, and rightly so. We do not issue rulings; we set out the positions fairly. There is no official fatwa from the Council of Senior Scholars on cryptocurrency. Sheikh Abdullah Al-Manea, a council member, said in 2018 that he considers it impermissible, and Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem took that view in 2017. Other scholars, including Mufti Faraz Adam of Amanah Advisors, permit it under conditions that are commonly cited: no riba, no gharar or gambling, real utility behind the asset, and spot trading rather than leverage or futures. The right step is to ask a scholar you trust. Our halal guide collects the views without taking sides.

On Zakat, ZATCA has issued no crypto-specific guidance, and Zakat is filed through it formally by businesses. An individual's Zakat on stablecoinsstablecoinA cryptocurrency pegged to a stable asset such as the US dollar, like USDT. It does not swing like Bitcoin, but it depends on trust in its issuer. or Bitcoin is a scholarly question, and many scholars treat holdings as trade goods or currency at 2.5% once the nisab is reached and a lunar year has passed. Details are on our tax and Zakat page. There is no personal income tax or capital-gains tax for individuals in the Kingdom.

Frequently asked questions

Is there a Bitcoin ATM or crypto office in Buraidah or Ha'il?

No. No Bitcoin ATM has been verified in any Saudi city, and none was ever listed for Qassim or Ha'il. No licensed money changer sells crypto either, because SAMA has licensed nobody to do so. Buying happens online, by card or through SAR P2P.

Can I use my Al Rajhi account or urpay to buy?

Al Rajhi itself does not offer crypto services, like every SAMA-supervised bank. But urpay, Al Rajhi's wallet, has been an officially listed payment method in Binance's SAR P2P market since April 2022, which means you pay another user from it, not Binance. A normal bank transfer from Al Rajhi to a P2P seller usually works too. The bank has published no position allowing or forbidding it, so we attribute none to it.

Is crypto trading halal?

We do not issue rulings. There is no official fatwa from the Council of Senior Scholars; Sheikh Abdullah Al-Manea, a council member, said in 2018 that he considers it impermissible, as did Sheikh Assim Al-Hakeem in 2017, while other scholars permit it under conditions: no riba, no gharar or gambling, real utility, and spot trading without leverage. Ask a scholar you trust; our halal guide sets out the positions fairly.

Is Zakat due on crypto?

ZATCA has issued no crypto-specific guidance, and Zakat is filed through it formally by businesses, not individuals. An individual's Zakat on crypto holdings is a scholarly question on which scholars differ; many treat it as trade goods or currency at 2.5%. Our tax and Zakat page explains the views.

I trade dates. Can I accept Bitcoin from a foreign buyer?

There is no Saudi framework for merchants accepting crypto, banks do not offer the service, and turning receipts into riyals goes through P2P with no local protection. For a business there are also unclear accounting and Zakat consequences. The safer course is to keep trade settlements on formal bank rails and keep any personal crypto investment separate from the business's money.

How much do I need to start?

The minimum card purchase on CEX.IO is 20 USD (about SAR 75). On P2P each seller sets their own minimum. We suggest starting with an amount you could lose entirely and doing one test withdrawal to your own wallet before you add more.
