Sending money from Saudi Arabia with USDT

Residents sent SAR 125.2 billion abroad in the first nine months of 2025. A growing share of Bangladeshi, Indian, Pakistani, Yemeni and Egyptian workers now ask whether a stablecoin beats the bank counter. Sometimes it does; here is how to tell.

The question behind every "crypto remittance" search from Riyadh, Jeddah or Dammam is simple: will more money reach my family if I send USDTUSDT (Tether)A stablecoin designed to track the US dollar one-to-one. Because the riyal is pegged at 3.75 per dollar, USDT behaves like a digital riyal-equivalent and is the coin most SAR P2P trades settle in. instead of using the bank, Western Union or stc pay? The honest answer is "it depends on the corridor, the amount and who is receiving", and this page gives you the pieces to work it out rather than a slogan. We describe how the USDT route works end to end, where its three costs hide, what the receiving country's rules might do to your recipient, and the cases where a licensed transfer is simply the better choice.

The corridors in numbers

Saudi Arabia is one of the world's largest sources of remittances. SAMA data reported by Argaam put expatriate remittances at SAR 14.91 billion in July 2025 alone, up 15% on the year, and the Union of Arab Chambers summarised the first nine months of 2025 at SAR 125.2 billion, up 19.6%, with every quarter of the year above SAR 40 billion. The people behind those numbers are the Kingdom's 13.4 million non-Saudi residents: at the 2022 census, 2.12 million from Bangladesh, 1.88 million from India, 1.81 million from Pakistan, 1.80 million from Yemen, 1.47 million from Egypt, followed by Sudan, the Philippines, Syria and Nepal.

1.81mPakistani residents
1.47mEgyptian residents

No official source measures what share of this money moves as stablecoins. Chainalysis has described stablecoins as gaining share in Saudi Arabia's crypto activity, and a stablecoin pilot aimed at pilgrims (UmrahCash) has been reported, but "USDT is widely used for remittances from KSA" is not something anyone can prove. Treat the crypto route as emerging, used by a minority who are comfortable with exchange apps on both ends.

The traditional rails you are comparing against

Four licensed routes carry most of the money. Bank international transfers from Al Rajhi, SNB, Riyad Bank or Alinma, priced as a fee plus the bank's exchange-rate margin. Western Union, whose Saudi site lists Bank Albilad and Ersal among its digital partners, with an online fee quoted at SAR 15 on that page and identity checks through Nafath. stc pay, now part of the SAMA-supervised stc bank, which offers an in-app international transfer product. And urpay, Al Rajhi's wallet, which advertises local and international transfers. Each of these gives you a receipt, a regulated counterparty, and someone to complain to. The crypto route gives you none of those, which is why the comparison has to be about the amount that lands, not only the fee.

How the USDT route works, step by step

  1. Buy USDT with riyals

Most residents use the SAR P2P market on Binance, Bybit or OKX: you pay a seller by bank transfer, stc pay or urpay and the exchange holds the USDT in escrow until the seller confirms. Alternatively buy with a Visa, Mastercard or Apple Pay in USD on CEX.IO (your bank converts the riyals). See our P2P guide.

  2. Pick the network

Ask the recipient which network their exchange or wallet accepts. TRC-20 (Tron) is the usual remittance choice for its low fees; ERC-20 is widely supported but costlier; Solana and TON are also official Tether networks. The network on both sides must match.

  3. Withdraw to the recipient's address

Copy the address from their app, paste it, and check the first and last characters. Send a small test amount first. Exchange withdrawal fees vary by venue and network; the on-chain TRC-20 cost is typically a dollar or two.

  4. Recipient sells for local currency

They sell the USDT on their local P2P market or a licensed local exchange and receive bank or mobile-money funds. The rate they get, versus the official dollar rate, is the third cost of the route.

  5. Keep records on both sides

Screenshots of the P2P order, the transaction hash, and the recipient's sale. If either bank asks about the transfers, you want a clean paper trail.

An honest cost comparison

We are not going to print "USDT saves you 5%" because no sourced figure supports a single number for every corridor. What we can do is name the components, so you can price your own transfer on the day.

The route wins when the sum of premium, fees and recipient spread is smaller than the licensed rail's fee plus rate margin, which happens most often on larger amounts and in countries where the local USDT market pays close to, or above, the official dollar rate. It loses on small amounts, where a fixed fee is proportionally cheaper than two conversions, and in countries where the recipient must sell at a deep discount. Our USDT guide explains the networks and the peg in more depth.

Price the first leg: the P2P premium

The first cost is the easiest to measure. Open the SAR P2P market, note the best seller's price for one USDT, and type it below. Anything above 3.75 is the cost of the route, not of the coin.

On the Saudi side, crypto is not prohibited for individuals but it is unregulated: the 2018 Standing Committee statement that virtual currencies are not approved and that nobody is licensed to deal in them still stands, banks and payment apps do not offer crypto services, and you have no investor protection. Saudi Arabia has been a full FATF member since 2019, and AMLAML (anti-money-laundering)Rules that oblige financial institutions to identify customers and flag suspicious transfers. Regular, modest-sized transfers that match your salary are unlikely to draw attention; large or erratic ones might. reviews of unusual inbound transfers are a generic risk, so keep P2P activity proportionate to your income and never let anyone else's money pass through your account. Expats should also read our Iqama KYC guide, because a verified account in your own name is the only safe way to buy.

On the receiving side the picture varies by country and changes often. Several of the main destination countries restrict or tax crypto in some way: some tax gains and deduct tax at source on trades, some restrict banks from processing crypto-related payments, some have simply issued warnings. Your recipient is the one who sells USDT for local currency, so they are the one exposed. Before you make this a monthly routine, have them check their own central bank's position and, where crypto is taxed, keep records for their filing. A transfer that saves money but creates a legal problem for your family has not saved anything.

Speed and timing

The USDT route is usually same-day but rarely instant. Buying on P2P takes minutes once the seller sees your riyals, and sellers are most active during Saudi banking hours, when stc pay and urpay transfers land in seconds and bank transfers clear same day. The on-chain transfer settles in minutes on TRC-20. The slow leg is at the destination: the recipient's P2P sale, and then their bank's crediting hours. Licensed rails, by contrast, range from minutes (app-to-app wallet payouts) to two or three working days (bank wires through correspondent banks). If a hospital bill is due tonight, use whichever rail your recipient can actually cash out tonight.

Scams that live on this route

Three more to know. Third-party payments: a P2P buyer pays you from someone else's bank account; if that money is stolen, your account is the one frozen, so refuse any payment whose sender name does not match the buyer's verified name. Wrong-network deposits: USDT sent on TRC-20 to an exchange address that only accepts ERC-20 is gone. And "flash USDT" or fake-token deposits that show a balance in a wallet but cannot be moved; always confirm on a block explorer that real USDT arrived. The scams guide covers the rest.

When a traditional transfer is simply better

Use the bank, Western Union, stc pay or urpay when the amount is a few hundred riyals and a fixed fee beats two conversions; when your recipient has no verified exchange account, no smartphone confidence or no liquid local P2P market; when the destination restricts crypto and the recipient would be the one breaking a rule; when you need an official receipt for a visa, a loan or a tax return; and when the cost gap is marginal, because the licensed rail's consumer protection is worth a small premium. The crypto route earns its place on larger, regular transfers to a recipient who is already comfortable selling USDT locally at a fair rate, and even then, only with a test transfer first.

Whichever route you choose, the peg does the arithmetic for you: one US dollar is 3.75 riyals, so every riyal above that on a USDT price, and every point of discount below the official rate on the receiving end, is the price of the service. Add them up, compare with the counter's quote, and send the money the way that puts the most in your family's hands.

Frequently asked questions

Is it legal to send money from Saudi Arabia with USDT?

Saudi Arabia does not prohibit individuals from holding or transferring crypto, but the activity is unregulated and no platform is licensed here; SAMA-supervised banks and payment apps do not offer it. The bigger legal question is on the receiving end: several destination countries restrict or tax crypto, and the recipient is the one exposed. Check the rules where the money lands before you send.

Is USDT cheaper than Western Union or a bank transfer from Saudi Arabia?

Sometimes, and it depends on the corridor and the amount. The USDT route has three cost layers: the P2P premium over the 3.75 peg when you buy, the network fee to send, and the spread the recipient accepts when selling for local currency. Traditional rails have a fee plus an exchange-rate margin. Compare the local-currency amount that actually arrives, not the headline fee.

Which network should I use to send USDT home?

TRC-20 (Tron) is the common choice for remittances because on-chain fees are typically a dollar or two and transfers settle in minutes. ERC-20 (Ethereum) can cost far more at busy times. Whatever you pick, the recipient's wallet or exchange must support the same network; sending USDT on the wrong network loses the funds.

How fast does a USDT remittance arrive?

The P2P purchase takes minutes once the seller confirms your riyals; the on-chain transfer settles in minutes; the slow step is the recipient selling USDT and getting local currency into a bank account, which depends on their local P2P market and banking hours. End to end, same day is typical, but it is not instant.

What is the most common remittance scam?

The "agent" who offers to convert your riyals to USDT or to deliver cash to your family at a better rate than the market. You hand over riyals or USDT and the agent disappears, or the cash delivered is less than agreed. Never use an intermediary outside an exchange's escrow, and never send USDT to someone before the riyals you were promised are in your own account.

When is a normal bank or stc pay transfer simply better?

When the amount is small, when the recipient has no verified exchange account or reliable local P2P market, when the destination restricts crypto, or when you need a receipt for a loan, visa or tax purpose. For a few hundred riyals, the fixed fee on a licensed rail is often cheaper than two conversions plus a network fee, and it comes with consumer protection.
